directed by British film sensation Danny Boyle, 28 days later explored the growing concern with the scientific area of viral experimentation. brought out by DNA films under the eye of fox searchlight pictures, the film was a survival horror with a difference. it didnt have heros of villians, but instead followed non generic people in an all to real struggle for survival.
the story of 28 days later is centred around the outbreak of a human created virus that locks its victims in a permanent state of rage. transmitted by bodiely fluids and lethal within seconds, the country (england) is quickly over run and quarantined. the few survivors quickly band together in the attempts to survive the hoards of infected staking every part of the nation. suffering deaths, the group move north to a military holdout, only to discover that the soldiers are as dangerous as the undead. in a final confrontation the survivors escape the military and manage to attract the attention of a UN fighter jet, thus ensuring their survival. Or least that’s what we’re led to believe.
The film’s opening was very useful to me as it was done in style that is very similar to the one I’m considering for my piece. This style is the ‘very dark and obviously something bad is going to happen’ style. It is used effectively here and is a good beginning for the rest of the film. The scene is made of medium and close up shots. The clip itself is also fairly short, therefore proving you can get an effective opening with a limited amount of time.
